An elder told me right after an awful earthquake that news about earthquakes, wars, and other disasters made his heart "leap for joy" because bad news proved the end was near. He was smiling when he said it. That was at least 16 years ago because I was still going to meetings at that hall. Fast forward to a couple of months ago when I saw the same elder at my sister's wedding. He was showing his age. I asked if he was still working or if he had retired. He said he was still working (keep in mind that he is in his 70's) because Social Security didn't pay enough for him and his wife to live on. I felt like saying that his story made my heart leap for joy because it proved being a witness ensured working until you dropped. I actually feel sorry for him and his wife. They are decent people for the most part.

I read in an on-line Time article that the Iranian government is urging Iranians to boycott products including Pepsi because profits are being used for war. According to the article, the Iranian government says that Pepsi actually stands for "Pay Each Penny to Save Israel." Maybe I'll switch to Coke. Then again, what if Coke stands for "Cast Out Korans Everybody?" Maybe I should go for RC although that might stand for "Reject Christ." Is Shasta still in business?

Harris, 20, said he grew up in the religion but began to feel closer to it when he noticed events in the Bible were "coming true."
I also noticed that "events in the bible were coming true" back 20-25 years ago when I was Harris's age. The echos of Viet-Nam and Watergate were strong. The Cold War was at its peak. The OPEC oil embargo was hitting hard. The Iranian hostage crisis had everyone nervous. The Soviets invaded Afghanistan. Anyone remember the term "stagflation?" High unemployment + high inflation = stagflation. I remember unemployment over 10% and interest rates from the bank at 18%. I remember when scientists warned us of global cooling and the start of AIDS. And earthquakes. And famine. And so on and so on. I remember some politician (either Carter or Reagan) using those magic words "peace and security" and the shiver hearing those words sent through me. One day, if he is lucky, young Harris will realize that there are good times and then there are bad times followed by good times with more bad times to follow. It is the way history repeats itself.

To Dang Perfect in Minnesota. Blue skies and 80 today and starry skies and 60 overnight. Spent the day on my motorcycle riding a charity event sponsered by the Vikings. I didn't win anything at the raffle, but it was fun hanging out with the Viking cheerleaders at the post ride bbq. More of the same tomorrow. Maybe I'll go sailing.

past lives
by BlackSwan of Memphis inoops lets try again.
i've been wanting to ask people this for awhile.
what would your best guess be as to who you might have been in a past life?

I had a couple of dreams last night that may have been past life related. In the first one I was on a horse next to some guy with long blond hair. He wore a buckskin jacket. He must have been a military person because I called him General. Anyway, he asked what I thought and I said, "Them Injuns are going to run like skeerd bunnies when they sees us, General." Then the General said, "Then we will ATTACK!!" And we took off at full gallop toward an Indian camp next to a river. I woke up in a cold sweat.
The next dream I had was set in New Jersey of all places. I was in the cockpit of what appeared to be a giant hydrogen filled blimp of some sort and I told the pilots, "Land this damn thing. I really need to take a dump!" A few seconds later I said to someone next to me, "Do you smell something burning?" Again I woke up in a cold sweat. Eerie.

I had to go to a website for help on this one. The site was:
http://www.quizmeme.com/pastlife/quiz.php
According to the site, I was a "lively scientist" in a past life but it didn't say which one.
Personally I think I was that guy who forgot to lock the door to the private theater box Lincoln was using when he attended the play "Our American Cousin." To make matters worse, I distinctly remember asking the First Lady, as she was leaving the theater, "Other then that, Mrs. Lincoln, did you enjoy the play?" Man, it was just not my day. In a later life, I was the guy who told Capt. Smith that "only a wimp would worry about icebergs." I don't really want to revisit what happened right after I said that. Lets just say it got ugly.

BoE letters up (1977-2001), plus public talk outlines
by Jourles init looks like the 1977-2001 letters are up!
the '01-'06 letters will be forthcoming shortly i hear.. http://www.reexamine.org/boe/.

The letter is about lawsuits, search warrents, and other legal issues. It is classed "confidential" at the top. I noticed in paragraph B of the document, concerning child abuse, that the letter instructs elders to contact the legal department immediately when incidents are reported. I would have thought they would have said to first contact local police and then contact the society's legal department. I didn't read the whole document yet. Here is the link:

I briefly looked over some of the content. I had to chuckle when I read this post script:
P.S. Due to the importanse of the information that is presented herein it is suggested that the body of elders jointly read and consider this letter as soon as possible after its receipt in the congregation. Please do not make any copies of this letter, nor should it be read by others. It should be kept in the congregations confidential files for any future reference that may be required by the body of elders.
And now its on the internet!!!

From Beirut:
Beirut night life photos taken before the war started. Some very attractive people. Wonder how they are doing?

From Israel:
A little different perspective on things than you get from network news.
